Burner Controls & Variable Speed Drives

Large Energy Savings & a Reduced Carbon Footprint

For many companies energy costs are one of their bigger expenses, if we can reduce these costs by even as little as 2% this could equate to savings of thousands of pounds.

We offer complete burner control upgrades to burner replacements. Burners with poor controls offer poor pressure control, low reliability and increased fuel consumption.

We install some of the most up to date controls on the market. They offer:-

  • Improved combustion and improved turn down saves up to 5% on fuel costs and significantly reduces harmful CO2 and other flue gas emissions.
  • Servo motors with a positioning accuracy of ±0.1° replace conventional characterising cams and linkages and eliminates backlash and hysteresis.
  • Using a second set point during periods of low demand can save up to 10% in fuel usage.
  • Functional integration of burner control, gas leak detection, gas valve proving, flame supervision, PID modulation and fuel air ratio control in a single unit simplifies wiring and interconnections and improves reliability.
  • Pass code protection to prevent untrained/unauthorised changes to combustion set-up.
  • ComView Burner Management Software allows advanced interfacing functions and allows collection/trend logging of data.
  • Oxygen trim saves up to 3.5%.

Variable speed fan control is an integral part of the system right but it can be installed separately to most burners.

Having variable speed control for boiler fans allows you to:

  • Make electrical energy savings across the firing range and improve efficiency at low fire by facilitating greater control of the air supply to the burner.
  • Significantly reduce boiler house noise; typically by around 50% at low fire.
  • Prolong the life of fan motors by reducing the number of revolutions needed to do the job.

With both mechanical cam and basic electronic fuel/air ratio control, combustion efficiency at low fire is sacrificed to achieve improvements in burner turn-down.

Some air dampers leak and even when fully closed the air flow can be significant. In effect, fuel/air ratio controls can reduce the fuel valve setting but cannot reduce the air supply to match. Combustion efficiency can be improved at low fire if the fan speed is reduced.

By adding fan speed control, burner turn-down can be increased without compromising efficiency, and additional fuel savings can be achieved.

The benefits of variable speed control do not end here. When an inverter is used to slow the speed of an A/C electric motor, electrical energy savings result. For example, when a fan motor is slowed to 25Hz (half speed), an 80% electrical energy saving is achieved.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps supply more energy than they consume, by extracting heat from their surroundings. Currently heat pump systems can supply as much as 3kW of heat output for just 1kw of energy input. Heat is transferred from outside air or from warm exhaust air. It can also be drawn from a water source such as a river, ground or waste water. Heat from any of these sources is used to heat air or water for various heating needs. Unlike other heating systems heat pumps can also be used for cooling.

Our engineers have been fully trained and hold a BTEC qualification in Ground source heat pumps. We specialise in Calorex, Danfoss and Nibe heat pumps, have been manufacturer trained and carry many spares. Currently we maintain in

the region of 300 heat pumps.
